Comparing three spatial modeling tools for assessing urban ecosystem services

چکیده

The (re)integration of nature into cities has been a progressively promoted strategy to foster sustainable urbanization. To quantify the ecosystem services (ES) provided by urban nature, spatially explicit ES modeling is key method. However, particularly in absence independent validation data, there clear need for multi-model assessments order better understand uncertainties model outcomes. Here we applied three commonly used open-source models (i.e., InVEST, LUCI, NC-Model) local temperature regulation, flood protection and global climate regulation) using city Hague (The Netherlands) as case study. We quantified current situation under two hypothetical scenarios representing changes amount vegetation within city. found mostly positive correlations between estimates given (Spearman’s ρ from 0.11 0.84). Yet, our comparison also revealed systematic differences indicator values models, well different responses scenarios. These may stem structure biophysical processes accounted for) parameterization value process). further advance modeling, recommend i) improve representation (e.g., green roofs, bioswales, gardens) urban-specific conditions drainage systems, building patterns, soil characteristics) ii) systematically account uncertainty (urban) through assessments).

A comparison of tools for modeling freshwater ecosystem services.

Interest in ecosystem services has grown tremendously among a wide range of sectors, including government agencies, NGO's and the business community. Ecosystem services entailing freshwater (e.g. flood control, the provision of hydropower, and water supply), as well as carbon storage and sequestration, have received the greatest attention in both scientific and on-the-ground applications. Given...

Sustainability and Urban Dynamics: Assessing Future Impacts on Ecosystem Services

Sustainable management of a region’s critical and valued ecosystem resources requires an understanding about how these resource systems might function into the future. In urbanized areas, this requires the ability to frame the role of resources within the context of urban dynamics and the implications of policy and investment choices. In this paper we describe a three-step approach to assessing...

Global Drivers and Tradeoffs of Three Urban Vegetation Ecosystem Services

Our world is increasingly urbanizing which is highlighting that sustainable cities are essential for maintaining human well-being. This research is one of the first attempts to globally synthesize the effects of urbanization on ecosystem services and how these relate to governance, social development and climate. Three urban vegetation ecosystem services (carbon storage, recreation potential an...

Identifying spatial priorities for protecting ecosystem services

Priorities for protecting ecosystem services must be identified to ensure future human well-being. Approaches to broad-scale spatial prioritization of ecosystem services are becoming increasingly popular and are a vital precursor to identifying locations where further detailed analyses of the management of ecosystem services is required (e.g., examining trade-offs among management actions). Pri...

Assessing Ecosystem Services to Identify Conservation Priorities

The history of life is fi lled with examples of one species diverging into several, even thousands, each with unique traits geared to the demands of its ecological niche. In the textbook case of adaptive radiation, an ancestral fi nch species landed on the Galapagos Islands just a few million years ago, and evolved into 13 new species with specialized beaks adapted to exploiting the various see...
